TOTAL strengthens its commitment to mobility of the future
New structure to shape change in mobility
Berlin, January 31, 2020
TOTAL Deutschland GmbH is expanding its commitment to new energy sources and new forms of mobility. The first ultra-fast charging stations will be ready to operate this spring. In addition, further locations for hydrogen as well as CNG and LNG filling stations are planned. These activities will be realized and bundled in a newly created Mobility & New Energies Directorate. Under the leadership of Jan Petersen its task is to actively respond to the challenges of climate change and the increasing digitalization of the mobility sector. Jan Petersen has been part of the TOTAL Group for many years and was most recently responsible for the retail and consumer business.
"The creation of the new directorate is a clear statement for the future: We as TOTAL are committed to better energy that is safer, more affordable, cleaner and accessible to as many people as possible", explains Bruno Daude-Lagrave, Managing Director of TOTAL Deutschland. "The new directorate Mobility & New Energies enables us to react fast to the changing market and to actively contribute to the emissions reduction."
"The first important task in my new position is to set up a powerful network of ultra-fast charging stations along the motorways", explains Jan Petersen, Director Mobility & New Energies at TOTAL. "In the fields of hydrogen and natural gas mobility TOTAL has been a pioneer for years and is constantly developing the network. In the same way, we will now consistently advance the infrastructure expansion for battery electric mobility".
By the end of 2022, the TOTAL Group will have installed around 1,000 charging points at 300 sites in Western Europe with ultra-fast charging stations that have a capacity of up to 175 kW each. Germany will have nearly 70 sites with around 200 charging points, according to current planning. "For the moment, we see the demand for ultra-fast charging especially along the motorways. To ensure a dense network we will therefore install HPC stations (High Power Charging) every 150 kilometers", explains Jan Petersen. TOTAL’s first HPC stations in Germany are currently being built at the Barsinghausen, Weißenfels, Osterfeld and Alsfeld truck stops as well as at the TOTAL station in Kirchheim Teck. They will be put into operation by spring 2020.
TOTAL has been active in the field of alternative energies for a long time: As early as 2002, the company opened its first hydrogen filling station. By the end of 2020, the network will grow to over 25 hydrogen filling stations at TOTAL locations. As a member of the H2 MOBILITY joint venture, TOTAL is part of the H2 initiative, which will reach the mark of 100 stations in Germany this year.
At around 90 TOTAL filling stations customers can also fill up with natural gas (CNG). In the coming months, the first stations, among them the Hirschberg/A5, Geiselwind, Schopsdorf, Osterfeld, Großweitzschen and Alsfeld truck stops, will be offering liquefied natural gas (LNG) for heavy-duty vehicles.
TOTAL is well prepared for the growing number of battery-electric cars and already offers charging stations at several locations – mostly in cooperation with partners. A next step will be to offer charging station concepts as a service at new locations, e.g. in office buildings or public spaces.
A further priority of the new directorate is the digitalization of offers and application fields. TOTAL is already successful in the fuel card business with numerous services, such as the introduction of cashless payment via its e-wallet which is also used in car sharing. Other mobility services will be systematically developed. "If our customers are increasingly opting for alternative energies, we can offer them suitable and attractive services with the TOTAL Card that covers all forms of energy," says Petersen.
"Above all, our goal at TOTAL is one thing: to provide the energy for the mobility of the future. This can only be a mix of different technologies," explains Managing Director Daude-Lagrave. "Whatever form of mobility our customers and B2B partners choose – they can rely on us that we supply them with the right energy.”
