Berlin / Munich, 29th November 2016

  • Pay for fuel directly from your car
  • Digital refuelling cards are an important step towards the development autonomous fleets
  • This offer for DriveNow customers is initially only available at TOTAL service stations in Berlin, further cities to follow

DriveNow, the BMW Group and Sixt SE’s joint carsharing venture, and TOTAL are introducing a digital payment system in Berlin starting today. Effective immediately, DriveNow customers can pay directly from their car at TOTAL service stations in DriveNow’s area of operation and no longer need to go to the checkout. DriveNow vehicles communicate directly with the cash register at the service station, thus making the traditional fuel card available in the car obsolete. By the end of the year, TOTAL will also incorporate other service stations in and around Berlin into the DriveNow digital payment process.

With this new method of payment at TOTAL service stations, we are make refuelling much easier for our customers and for service employees”, says DriveNow’s managing director Nico Gabriel. Over 85 percent of refuelling processes for DriveNow in Germany were carried out by customers. If the fuel gauge of one of the vehicles in the fleet reads below 25 percent, the customers receive free minutes for refuelling. “This innovation not only benefits the customers by allowing them to pay digitally”, continues Gabriel, “it is also taking the market one step closer to autonomous driving.” Prerequisites for the future operation of a partially autonomous carsharing fleet include the development of automatic refuelling and charging processes without any human intervention.

Bruno Daude-Lagrave, managing director at TOTAL Deutschland GmbH, emphasises: “Today, we have created the technical foundation for further digital payment methods, for instance using a smartphone. Our TOTAL card offers extensive services and is evolving into a digital platform, which we can systematically develop and design to meet individual customer needs!“

Simple payment solution via the carsharing vehicles’ navigation system

At participating TOTAL service stations, the DriveNow vehicles use the navigation system to automatically recognise their location. Once the engine has been turned off, the driver can begin the refuelling process using a dialogue window on the dashboard display. The driver refuels the car at the pump in the normal manner and then enters the number of the pump into the display. Payment is then effected immediately as a dialogue between the vehicle and the cash register.
