Elisabeth Unterberg

Elisabeth Unterberg: Shape the future

Elisabeth Unterberg works as Sales Director LPG/LNG in Duisburg and lives with her family in Moers.

You have been working for TOTAL for more than 12 years. How did you find out about the company and what kept you here?

I have always had the desire to be able to work internationally, so I was traveling a lot during my studies. After that, TOTAL offered me to start a trainee program that gave me a wide range of professional experience at various European locations. These years were very dynamic, exciting and valuable. In addition to that, it was the best school for my job today.

A large international company like TOTAL offers everyone who is ready to get involved the opportunity to grow and to find exciting professional challenges.

What are your tasks as Sales Director for liquefied gas?

Basically, my team and I market our liquefied gas production in Germany as well as quantities from other refineries. For the most part, it is a trading business. We have many projects and it is also one of my personal tasks to pave the way and to question structures and processes. Furthermore, I conduct analyses and do the planning. And of course, there are classic management tasks.

What project are you currently working on?

We are currently preparing to merge with our Belgian colleagues from the marketing and services departments. The goal is to jointly market the quantities of liquefied gas from the so-called ARA region (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp) as we have to work more closely together if we want to optimize our results. This project is very exciting for us and we are also taking on a pioneering role.

As a responsible global energy company, TOTAL wants to provide accessible and clean energy to as many people as possible. What can you do in your current position?

Almost a quarter of the liquefied gases that we produce, purchase and market in Germany for final energy consumption are used in the LPG business. LPG is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fuels because it has lower CO2 emissions than petrol or diesel. Furthermore, we promote biogas plants by supplying them with propane to enrich the gas.

The topic of small scale LNG is also very present for us. TOTAL has become the second largest player in the LNG sector worldwide. As a marketing department, we support the company in establishing liquefied natural gas as a fuel in the transportation and marine sectors. The logistics chain is in place, now we are working on customer acquisition.

We also want to bring bio-propane, which is already produced in the south of France, to Germany. In discussions with our customers we are currently developing a business model for this.

In addition to your many activities, you are committed to equal career opportunities for women and men. In October 2019 you were speaker at the "herCAREER" jobs fair for women.

The topic is very important to me. Generally, I don't think it is fundamentally more difficult for women to have a career. But women need to be aware of certain issues that sometimes get in their way: the importance of their visibility, for example, and that they give themselves the space and the chance to grow, even if it means that they have to leave their comfort zone. Or that exchange of experience makes you strong, gives you courage and sometimes new approaches. Here, I would like to support and therefore I am also an active member of the "TWICE" network at TOTAL, in which the promotion of women is a central focus.

How do you think filling stations and the entire industry will develop?

The industry is facing major challenges. And mobility is a very complex matter due to the many individual mobility patterns for which individual solutions have to be found. I think that TOTAL is going exactly the right way by positioning itself broadly - in addition to classic fuels, there is now a whole range of alternatives: LNG, CNG and in the area of electromobility hydrogen and e-charging stations. The same applies to the entire company: It is impressive to see how strongly TOTAL is converting the entire portfolio to sustainable energies, which is clearly shown by the establishment of the new Mobility & New Energies directorate: This commitment is very serious and the right investment in the future.
