Present in Africa for more than 80 years, Total takes action to contribute to the economic and social development of the continent in a spirit of dialogue and partnership with all its stakeholders. The Group has the distinction of being the leading distributor of petroleum products (fuels, lubricants, bitumens, LPG, etc.) with the largest network of service stations on the continent. To meet the needs of its two million daily customers, Total is diversifying the range of products and services offered in its stations, improving the customer’s overall experience.

More stations and more services

The Total retail network in Africa now has more than 4,200 service stations in 36 countries. Another several hundred will open within five years. As part of this expansion, stations are becoming multi-service points of sale, offering more than just fuel, lubricants, groceries and cash points.

For example, on a continent where over 70% of people own mobile phones, Total is offering payment and money transfer solutions in partnership with carriers like Orange and Airtel. This service already exists in 20 African countries, and soon will be in 10 more.

In late 2016, the Group will also have close to 300 fast food establishments.

Finally, other services are envisioned, such as the delivery of online purchases in service stations. This is a practical service when you don’t have a home internet connection or an official mailing address.

With the expansion of its distribution network and its multiservice approach, Total intends to accompany the growth and changes occurring on the African continent by providing the energy and services that the populations need.

An exemplary employer

Our commitment to expanding access to our products and services in Africa is supported by a strong local presence that enables us to better meet the needs and expectations of our customers.
The Group locally recruits and trains hundreds of service station salespersons, supervisors and managers. The “Young Managers” (Jeunes gérants) program, which has existed since the 1960s, offers employees of Total stations the opportunity to become managers through training and personalized support.

“We are not looking for people only with financial means to run our service stations but we will rather go for people who are committed to run our service station, even if it means taking a bit of risk on them.  That is what partnerships mean for us.”1 Momar Nguer, President, Marketing & Services.

Finally, road safety is one of the Group’s key commitments. Trucks travel hundreds of thousands of kilometers each year to transport our products across the continent. The transporters as well as employees, suppliers and local populations are highly aware of road dangers.
